Browser Games: Free Games to Play in Your Browser, No Download
Looking for browser games that open in a tab, with no download and no install? This guide sorts the free browser games we track by genre and device, and keeps one rule throughout: we tell you what the project says, what we checked and when, and what still needs your own game files. Play games in browser with the right expectations.
Best browser games that start instantly
These browser games are the closest to “click and play”. Each project page describes starting without game files or downloads of your own. That is a documented claim, not our guarantee that every session works on every computer, and the first load can still pull tens or hundreds of megabytes into your browser.
- CS Surf (surfd.net)
Counter-Strike-style surf maps in the browser. The project describes free, no-download play with desktop keyboard and mouse. It is a surf game, not the full Counter-Strike.
- PES 6 web port
A football game in browser. Its Spanish FAQ describes no registration or downloads, WebGL 2, keyboard, gamepad and phone touch input. Performance and asset licensing are not verified by us.
- QuakeWorld (q1.pieter.com)
The page calls itself unofficial and non-commercial and describes QuakeWorld multiplayer for up to eight players with no installation.
- Black Ops Zombies maps (vel.gg/bo1z) →
The original map selector returned HTTP 451 on October 23, 2026. Read our dated check instead. On October 12 Kino der Toten downloaded 330.5 MB and reached “Click to start” without asking for files. We did not play a round.
Shooter browser games (Quake / Urban Terror / CS Surf)
Shooters are the most popular games in browser from the viral list, mostly thanks to WebAssembly ports of classic engines. Their page titles say they are unofficial and non-commercial. Expect an initial data download, desktop keyboard and mouse controls, and multiplayer that depends on who else is online.
- Quake II (q2.pieter.com)
Labelled unofficial Quake II multiplayer. We have not checked its modes or file requirements.
- Quake III (q3.pieter.com)
Labelled unofficial Quake III online. Requirements and playability are unverified.
- Urban Terror (ut.pieter.com)
Listed as “Unreal Tournament” in the viral post, but the page identifies itself as Urban Terror multiplayer. It recommends desktop Chrome and warns about an initial game-data download.
- Return to Castle Wolfenstein (rtcw.pieter.com)
Labelled unofficial multiplayer. Full-game availability and file requirements are not established.
- Black Ops Zombies launch check →
Our dated attempt to start Kino der Toten in the browser, and what it did and did not show.
Classic PC games in browser (Diablo shareware, Half-Life)
Old PC classics are a natural fit for browser games because their engines are small enough to compile for the web. The catch is the game data: the engine may be free to run while the original game content still belongs to its publisher.
- Diablo Web
Runs the limited shareware version without any file (a 25–50 MB first download). The full game needs your own DIABDAT.MPQ. Touch controls are documented; mouse and keyboard are recommended.
- Half-Life (pixelsuft.github.io/hl)
An Xash-based Half-Life project from the viral list. We have not verified what content it includes or whether you must supply files.
- WebXash
A separate web build of the Xash engine. An engine running in a tab does not establish rights to the commercial game data.
Browser games on mobile
Most browser games from the list are documented for desktop only. A few describe touch input. Touch support on a project page does not guarantee smooth play on your phone, and large downloads can fill storage quickly on mobile data.
- PES 6 web port
Documents phone touch input as well as keyboard and gamepad.
- Diablo Web
Documents touch controls; shareware without files, full game with your own MPQ.
- Halo CE Mobile
Documents touch and controller input, WebGL 2, iOS 17 or later and up to 1.8 GB of storage. It needs your own Xbox disc image.
Games in browser that need your own files
Several famous names in the viral list are engines, not free copies. They load in the browser and then ask for data from a game you own. We do not provide game files, disc images, ROMs or ripping tools, and you should only use files from copies you are entitled to use. A page that offers to download the full game for you, or asks you to run an .exe, is not a browser game.
- Halo in browser →
The engine loaded in under a minute on October 12, then asked for an XISO disc image from your own Xbox copy.
- Skate 3 in browser →
The project asks for your own converted game data; our check stopped on an error screen.
- GTA: Vice City WASM port
The project disclaimer requires your own legitimate copy, imported as game.tar.gz.
- GTA 5 in browser →
Not a working game: the list linked an archive capture that stalled at 6%.
How we test browser games
We keep evidence layers separate so a link never looks like a review. First, source inclusion: was the game in the original post? Second, project documentation: what does the project's own page say about files, devices and modes, and when did we read it? Third, destination checks: where did the link actually go on a given date? Fourth, a launch check: one dated attempt to start the game, noting exactly where it stopped. We only call something a gameplay test when someone controlled a session, and none of the entries on this page has that label yet.
Unknown stays unknown. If a project does not document mobile support, we do not guess. If a link starts redirecting to unrelated pages, we remove its button and say so. Read the full method on the games list.

FAQ
Are browser games free?
Opening a browser game costs nothing, and some projects describe full free play. Others offer a demo or shareware, and several need files from your own copy of the game. Check the files label before you start.
Do browser games need a download?
No install is needed, but most browser games download data into your browser on first load, sometimes hundreds of megabytes. You should never need to run an .exe or installer.
Can I play browser games on my phone?
A few projects document touch input, such as the PES 6 port, Diablo Web and Halo CE Mobile. Most others are documented for desktop keyboard and mouse only.
Are games in browser safe?
We cannot certify any third-party site as safe. Three original links from the viral list now redirect to betting pages. Close any page that asks for a download, a sign-up or payment to play.
Why don't you host the games?
Game in Browser is an independent reference. We link to projects with dated notes and never host or embed games, ROMs or disc images.
